Last weekend, we left the rat race for what it was.

We trokken er vorig weekend even tussenuit.

We put on our hiking boots, and went for long walks in the woods.

Om met de wandelschoenen aan de bossen in te trekken.

We learned that bucket hats are pretty efficient sombreros.

Om te zien dat zo'n zomerhoedje ook heel goed dienst kan doen als sombrero.

And we did absolutely nothing (and didn't take any pictures of that either, logically).

En om zalig niets te doen (en daar dus ook geen foto's van te hebben, a ja).

And when we got back, I saw that the Great Cloth Diaper Change world record effort succeeded. Good news. 8,331 baby bums neatly folded away in cloth nappies. That's 8,331 tons of non-existing garbage. If that's not worth the effort, I don't know what is.

En bij terugkomst zag ik dat onze Great-Cloth-Diaper-Changerecordpoging gelukt was. Goed nieuws dus. 8331 babybilletjes verpakt in stoffen luiers. Da's dus 8331 ton afval uitgespaard. Dat kan al tellen hé.

Bucket hats / Zomerhoedjes

She'd been hiding for a while, but now at least we know she's still there: the sun. And whenever there's sun, some protection is needed, especially for the smallest among us.

We hebben er lang op moeten wachten, maar ze is er nog: de zon. Allee, 't is te zeggen, af en toe toch. En bij die zon hoort een hoedje, toch zeker voor de allerkleinsten.

The one we still had here at home was one from last year. And while it was too big at that time, it's getting too small now. Time for a new one!

't Exemplaar dat we hier thuis hadden dateerde nog van vorige zomer. En was het toen nog te groot voor mijn kersverse baby, 't is nu behoorlijk te klein voor mijn peuter in spe. Tijd voor een nieuwtje, dus!

I based my version on the Oliver + S bucket hat pattern. Reversible, so I actually made 2 hats.

Als basispatroon gebruikte ik dat van Oliver + S. Omkeerbaar, dus eigenlijk heb ik 2 hoedjes gemaakt.

I added straps, so I can secure it tightly, saving me the trouble to stop cycling and run after the thing. To keep the hat reversible without there being straps in odd places on the outside, I left holes on the side, between the brim and the hat. That way, I can easily pull the straps through so they are on the right side.

Ik voegde er lintjes aan toe, zodat ik het hoedje kan dichtknopen en niet steeds moet stoppen met de fiets om achter dat ding aan te hollen. Om het hoedje toch omkeerbaar te houden zonder dat er dan plots lintjes op vreemde plaatsen aan de buitenkant zitten, liet ik aan de zijkanten een gaatje tussen de boord en het hoedje, zodat ik de lintjes gemakkelijk van de ene kant naar de andere door kan trekken en ze zich op de juiste plaats bevinden.

To avoid pulling the straps through completely, I just folded the ends a couple of times.

Om te voorkomen dat ik de lintjes er gewoon doortrek, sloeg ik de uiteinden een paar keer om.

Now I can choose between a tiny gnome or a toad stool.

Nu kan ik kiezen tussen een kleine kabouter, of een paddenstoel met witte stippen. En ondertussen door blijven trappen.

RIP Google Reader, hello The Old Reader

As you've all heard, Google Reader will disappear soon. For many of us, this came as quite the shock. Followed by a hint of panic (what should I do with all my RSS feeds!?), and the search for a worthy replacement.

Zoals iedereen ondertussen wel al weet, stopt Google Reader er binnenkort mee. Voor velen met mij, sloeg dit nieuws toch wel een beetje in als een bom. Gevolgd door lichte paniek (wat met al mijn RSS feeds?!) en een zoektocht naar een waardige vervanger.

It wasn't long before Bloglovin and Feedly were mentioned as our best option. And it's true, they seem nice, but I missed Google Reader's serenity. What I like about Google Reader, is that I can get a list of all blog posts and I can sort them from old to new. So I can work my way through it, starting with the oldest and scrolling through to the present. It's the scrolling down that I miss when I use Bloglovin. And for Feedly? Well, to be honest, I already forgot how it worked. And if I want to go and have a quick look at their site, I can't, because I have to install Feedly first.

Bloglovin en Feedly werden direct genoemd als beste optie. En ze zijn inderdaad mooi, maar ik miste de sereniteit van Google Reader. Wat ik leuk vind aan Google Reader is dat ik alle nieuwe blogposts mooi op een rijtje krijg en ze kan sorteren van oud naar nieuw. Zodat ik post per post bijbeen naar het heden. Dat simpelweg naar beneden scrollen, dat lijkt net te ontbreken bij Bloglovin. Van Feedly ben ik al vergeten hoe het nu weer werkte. En als ik even wil gaan kijken op de site, staat het mij toch niet aan dat ik het al direct moet installeren.

Eventually, I chose The Old Reader. It looks just like Google Reader. Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple to import my RSS feeds as it was for Bloglovin. I had to download a file first, then upload it again. And it took a while before my feeds were imported. But that's because The Old Reader is run by a team of 3 (!) people only. And they are continuously working on improvement. On top of that, you can go to their forum and suggest what you would like to see them develop.

Uiteindelijk kwam ik uit bij The Old Reader. Dat ziet er net uit als Google Reader. Overschakelen kostte wel iets meer inspanning dan bij Bloglovin. Ik moest een file downloaden, en dan weer importeren. En omdat het Old Reader team maar 3 (!) leden kent en ze nogal overspoeld werden door nieuwe gebruikers, duurde het ook even voor mijn feeds daadwerkelijk geïmporteerd werden. Maar ze werken er continue aan. En bovendien kan je via hun forum heel gemakkelijk laten weten wat je zelf graag nog zou zien ontwikkeld worden.

Even though it took a bit more effort, I'm a fan. I love the simplicity of it all. You just log in using your Google account (or Facebook account) and all your feeds are there, all together in one long list. And if their server gets overloaded, you get a picture of a cat. Who wouldn't love that?

Ik ben fan. Ik hou van de eenvoud. Je logt in met je Google account (of Facebook account) en al je feeds zitten daar, verzameld in één lange lijst. En als de server even niet mee kan, dan krijg je een foto van een kat te zien. Dus ik ben nog meer fan.

What about follow buttons? The Old Reader is part of subtome, so installing their follow button helps your Old-Reader followers. Although I must say the button really doesn't look like much at all (It's the ugly Subscribe thing in the sidebar). If sites don't have this button, I just copy the link and paste it in The Old Reader. I used to do that in Google Reader as well sometimes.

En wat met volgknoppen? The Old Reader zit ook onder subtome. Als je hun volgknop installeert, dan doe je je Old Readers ook een plezier. Al ziet die knop er echt niet uit ('t Is dat lelijk 'Subscribe' ding hiernaast). Maar bij gebrek aan zo'n knop,  kopieer ik de link gewoon om hem dan in The Old Reader te plakken. Ik deed het bij Google Reader ook al vaak zo.

GCDC - The day after

Yesterday, the Great Cloth Diaper Change took place. At exactly 11am local time, we tried to break the world record in changing cloth nappies. Here in Ghent, 54 baby's participated. That's 6 more than last year.

Gisteren was het zo ver. Om 11u was het tijd om het wereldrecord gelijktijdig stoffen luiers verversen te verbeteren. Hier in Gent deden er 54 baby's mee. Dat waren er al 6 meer dan vorig jaar.

And it was nice. The sun was out, there was incredibly nice soup, the goodiebags were fab, and everyone was in the right mood. Only downside: the speeches. Not that they lasted long, not at all, but when your baby is ready to have his nappy changed, listening to a 10-minute speech is not the first thing on his mind. But that's the only thing, as for the rest, really superb.

En 't was plezant. De zon scheen, de organisatie had voor ongelooflijk lekkere soep gezorgd, de goodiebags mochten er wezen en iedereen had er gewoon zin in. Klein minpuntje waren de speeches. Niet dat die zo lang duurden, maar als je baby al klaar ligt om verschoond te worden, dan zijn 10 minuten er echt wel 10 te veel. Voor de rest geen klagen.

In fact, it was so nice, we stayed a little longer afterwards. To enjoy the sunshine and have a chat with likely-minded parents. After which we loaded our kids into our cargo bikes and got going.

Wij zijn achteraf nog wat blijven hangen. Om te genieten van 't zonnetje en wat te praten met gelijkgestemden. Om dan in bakfiets- en fietskarcolonne huiswaarts te keren.

We even made it into the newspaper, yay!

The great cloth diaper change

Just a small post that has nothing to do with sewing, knitting or crochet. Just an announcement, really. On Saturday, 20 April, The Great Cloth Diaper Change takes place. Its aim? To simultaneously change our baby's reusable nappy all over the world and make it into the Guiness Book of Records. 

Even een berichtje dat niets met naaien, breien of haken te maken heeft. Gewoon een mededeling. Op zaterdag 20 april vindt The Great Cloth Diaper Change plaats. De bedoeling? Met z'n allen wereldwijd op hetzelfde moment de stoffen pamper van onze baby's verversen en zo in het Guiness Book of Records komen.

It's an international event that takes place in 225 locations. I'm taking part. I use reusable nappies, and I do get questions about it. Questions such as "Do you really throw those nappies in your washing machine?" or "Doesn't your jeans smell if you wash it with your nappies?". Well, no. The, euhm, more solid parts, go into the toilet or in the trash. Basically, it's the same as washing baby's clothes after there's been an accident. And I wash my jeans separately from those nappies, I wouldn't want the nappies to turn blue. So if you have questions like these as well, don't hesitate to go to one of the events. You'll surely get an anwser there!

't Is een internationaal evenement, en hier in België zijn er evenementen in Gent, Antwerpen, Kortrijk, Leuven, Beerse en Hoegaarden. Ik doe alleszins mee. Ik gebruik zelf ook herbruikbare luiers, en ik krijg daar nog regelmatig vragen over. Meestal iets als "Je gooit dat toch niet gewoon de wasmachine in?" of "Amaai, ruikt je jeans dan niet raar als hij gewassen is?" Nee dus, de grote pakketjes verdwijnen gewoon in het toilet of in de vuilniszak hoor. Net zoals je de rest van de kleertjes na een ongelukje gewoon de wasmachine in steekt. En ik steek mijn jeans niet bij de luiers, anders zouden die luiers er al lang zo wit niet meer uitzien. Met zulke en andere vragen kan je dus op de Great Cloth Diaper Change terecht!

Geek alert!

As a child, I was ever so slightly (hahaha, ever so slightly, she says!) addicted to my Gameboy. I told you about that before. What I didn't say back then, is that my addiction wasn't limited to that Gameboy. Hypothetically, for instance, it might just have happened that I told my friends while out and about that I really had to go home and get some sleep. While in fact, and this is still very hypothetical, I went home to play Sonic Heroes on my PS2 until the early morning hours.

Als kind was ik een beetje (hahaha, een beetje, zegt ze!) verslaafd aan mijn Gameboy. Ik heb dat wel al eens verteld. Wat ik er toen niet bij vertelde, is dat die verslaving daarom niet per se tot die Gameboy beperkt bleef. Zo zou het, puur hypothetisch natuurlijk, wel eens mogelijk kunnen zijn dat ik mijn vrienden op café achterliet onder 't mom van moe te zijn, om dan nog tot een stuk in de nacht Sonic Heroes te zitten spelen op de PS2. Puur hypothetisch dus hé.

So when I was about to tackle some more onesies, I thought, let's get those old heroes involved.

En toen ik nog 's aan een stapel rompertjes wou beginnen, dacht ik, laat ik mijn helden van toen nog 's optrommelen.

So Sonic is there.

Sonic dus.

And Spyro.

Maar ook wel Spyro.

And Mario and Luigi, of course.

En Mario en Luigi, natuurlijk.

And to limit the geekiness a tiny bit, I also made another Lada lover, so my little boy can go hit the town with his uncle.

En om dan toch nog 's de andere kant uit te gaan, nog een Lada lover, om assorti te zijn met de nonkel.

And what have we learned?

• Transfer paper isn't that ideal for onesies, the drawings do crack pretty easily. But of course you can also call that a vintage look.
• If you  don't have any baking paper lying around (and you are lazy as me), don't just use the paper wrapping around the chocolate to iron your drawing on. You may just transfer the glue as well and make spots that can't be removed anymore. And then you have to hide that fact by placing another onesie over it.

En wat hebben we geleerd?

• Transferpapier op rompertjes is eigenlijk niet aan te raden, want het kraakt nogal snel. Al heeft die vintage-look ook wel iets.
• Bij gebrek aan bakpapier (en te lui zijn om een goed velleke papier te zoeken), kies je toch beter niet voor de papieren verpakking van de chocolade om de tekening door te strijken. Want dan kan je de lijm al eens mee transfereren en plekken maken die er niet meer uitgaan. En dan moet je er een ander rompertje over leggen om die plek weg te steken.

So. Anyone else suffering from hypothetical addictions?

En? Nog mensen met zo'n hypothetische verslaving?

Baby stamping / Stempelfreude

Another baby, another stamp.

Een nieuwe baby, een nieuw stempeltje.

And this time I had planned it better.

Deze keer met een beetje meer tijd. Of een betere planning, te zien hoe je 't bekijkt.

To make it look more complete, hubby found a piece of wood to attach to its back.

Voor deze vond manlief nog een stukje hout om 't compleet te maken.

But alas, no glue in the house. So we used TEC7 instead.

Alleen vonden we geen lijm om 't vast te maken, dus gebruikten we maar TEC7.

See, it does pay to live on a semi building site. That piece of wood isn't going anywhere, ever!

Zo op een halve werf wonen, 't heeft zijn voordelen hoor. Dat stukje hout, dat komt nooit meer los!

When I'm making a stamp, I feel pretty clumsy. As if I can slip any moment and ruin the whole thing. A bit like Homer repairing Marge's camera (sorry, I could only find a German version).

Zo'n stempel maken, dat geeft mij toch wat een onhandig gevoel. Alsof ik elk moment kan uitglijden en heel de stempel een beetje om zeep kan helpen. Een beetje als Homer die Marges camera repareert (sorry, ik vond alleen een Duits fragment).
