BabyBjörn says Relax - tutorial

This baby bouncer chair is a hand-me-down. I got it from my cousin, and she in turn got it from a friend. Good stuff. But the original cover has some spots that I'm just not able to wash out. So there was a challenge waiting to be accepted.

Dit relaxstoeltje is een doorgeefstoeltje. Ik kreeg het van mijn nicht, en zij kreeg het op haar beurt ook al van vrienden. Goeie marchandise. Maar de originele hoes, die is ondertussen al voorzien van een aantal vlekken die er niet meer uit te krijgen zijn. Daar zat dus een kleine uitdaging op mij te wachten.

So I got going. With pencil, paper, measuring tape and a geometry triangle. And the original cover, of course.

Dus ging ik aan de slag. Met potlood, papier, lintmeter en geodriehoek. En de originele hoes natuurlijk.

And this was the result:

Reversable, of course, just like the original cover (something I only found out after I'd already started  making this new cover. Little did I know I could just hide all the spots by reversing that thing ;-) )

Omkeerbaar natuurlijk, net als de originele hoes (iets wat ik eigenlijk maar ontdekt heb nadat ik al aan dit nieuwe exemplaar begonnen was. Al dat werk voor niks, ik had dat ding gewoon moeten omdraaien, weg vlekken ;-) )

What do you need?

• Pattern paper
• Pencil (and rubber, you never know)
• Measure tape
• Geometry triangle
• 2 pieces of fabric with matching thread
• Fiberfill
• 6 buttons

How to draw the pattern?
The cover consists of the following parts:

• the back
• the seat
• the belt
• the bottom part
• the tabs onto which you'll attach the buttons

Hoe teken je het patroon?
De hoes bestaat uit volgende delen:

• de rugsteun
• het zitgedeelte
• de "gordel"
• het onderste vlak
• de lusjes om de knopen aan vast te hechten

The back

1. Put the cover on your pattern paper and use your hands to flatten it as much as possible.

De rugsteun

1. Leg de hoes op een vel patroonpapier en strijk ze met je handen zo glad mogelijk.

2. Trace the upper part of the cover with your pencil.
   Note:You may have to rearrange the cover as you do so, to even out the curvy bottom part as much as possible.

2. Ga met je potlood rond het bovenste gedeelte van de hoes.
   Opmerking: Je zal de hoes een beetje moeten herschikken terwijl je dit doet, om het bolle gedeelte onderaan zo plat mogelijk te krijgen.

3. Connect the bottom ends with a straight line and cut the pattern out.

3. Verbind de onderste punten met een rechte lijn en knip uit.

4. Fold the pattern in half, then cut it in half.

4. Vouw je stukje patroon in de lengte dubbel en knip door.

5. Check which of the two halves matches the back the best.

5. Kijk welk stukje het beste aansluit bij je rugsteun.

6. Use the best matching part and place it on the cover with the centre exactly on the centre seam and the bottom exactly on the bottom seam.

6. Leg dat stukje op je hoes met het midden precies op de middennaad en de onderkant precies op de onderste naad.

7. Adapt your pattern until it's exactly right. Check each change you make. When you are absolutely sure that your pattern matches the cover, check it once more.

7. Pas je patroon aan tot het precies past in de hoes. Check iedere aanpassing. Op het moment dat je echt zeker bent van je stuk, check je toch nog maar eens.

The seat

Draw the pattern for this part in the same way as you have drawn the back.

Teken dit deel net zoals je het rugdeel getekend hebt.

The belt

1. Place the belt on your pattern paper and trace it with your pencil. Trace around the buckles as well, so they'll be part of the pattern.

De gordel

1. Leg de gordel op je patroonpapier en teken er rond. Teken ook rond de sluitingen, zodat deze oppervlakte in je patroon inbegrepen is.

2. Fold the pattern in half, then cut it in half.

2. Vouw in de lengte dubbel en knip door.

3. Draw button holes as follows:
   • in the middle of the horizontal end, at 1,5 cm (0.6 in) from the side
   • on the centre seam, at 1,5 cm (0.6 in) from the bottom edge

3. Duid knoopsgaten aan op de volgende plaatsen:
   • op de helft van het horizontale uiteinde, op 1,5 cm van de rand
   • Op middenvoor, op 1,5 cm van de onderste rand

The bottom part

Draw a rectangle measuring 83 cm x 25.5 cm (32.5 in x 10 in)

Het onderste vlak

Teken een rechthoek van 83 cm x 25,5 cm

The tabs onto which you'll attach the buttons
Draw a rectangle measuring 5.5 cm x 10 cm (2.2 in x 4 in)

How to sew the cover
Preparations

Hoe stik je de hoes?
Voorbereiding

Cut all pattern pieces as follows:

• Back: on the fold, 1in each fabric, once in fiberfill, add 1 cm (0.4 in) seam allowance
• Seat: on the fold, 1 in each fabric, once in fiberfill, add 1 cm (0.4 in) seam allowance
• Belt: on the fold, 1 in each fabric, once in fiberfill, add 1 cm (0.4 in) seam allowance
• Bottom part: 1 in each fabric, seam allowance included
• Tabs: 4 in 1 of your fabrics, seam allowance included

Knip alle patroondelen als volgt:

• Rugsteun: aan de stofvouw, 1 keer in elke stof, en 1 keer in wattine, voeg telkens 1 cm naadwaarde toe
• Zitgedeelte: aan de stofvouw, 1 keer in elke stof, en 1 keer in wattine, voeg telkens 1 cm naadwaarde toe
• Gordel: aan de stofvouw, 1 keer in elke stof, voeg telkens 1 cm naadwaarde toe
• Onderste vlak: 1 keer in elke stof, naadwaarde inbegrepen
• Lusjes: 4 keer in 1 van de stofjes, naadwaarde inbegrepen

Iron interlining on the wrong sides of the tabs and the belt.

Bestrijk de lusjes en de gordel met vlieseline.

And go!

1. Pin the fiberfill for the back on the wrong side of one of the back parts.

En gaan!

1. Speld de wattine voor het rugdeel op de verkeerde kant van een van de stoffen rugdelen.

2. On the right side of the fabric, draw a vertical line in the centre of the back. On each side of this line, measure 5 cm (2 in) and draw a new line. Repeat until you've reached the sides of your pattern.

2. Teken op de goede kant van de stof een verticale lijn in het midden van het rugdeel. Meet aan weerskanten van deze lijn 5 cm en teken een nieuwe lijn. Doe dit tot je aan de zijranden van je patroon komt.

3. Stitch all these lines.

3. Stik al deze lijnen door.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 for the seat, but draw the lines horizontally and start at 5 cm (2 in) from the upper side.

4. Herhaal stap 1-3 voor het zitgedeelte, maar teken de lijnen daar horizontaal en begin op 5 cm van de bovenste rand.

5. At the bottom centre of the back, using a big stitch, stitch 2 lines of approximately 10 cm (4 in). Do not secure your thread and leave quite some thread on both ends, so you can easily use it to wrinkle.

5. Stik met een grote steek onderaan in het midden van de rugsteun 2 lijntjes van ongeveer 10 cm in de naad. Hecht je draad niet vast en laat redelijk wat draad hangen, zodat je deze kan gebruiken om te fronsen.

6. Repeat step 5 for the seat, wrinkling the curvy part.

6. Herhaal stap 5 voor het zitgedeelte, rimpel het bolle gedeelte.

7. Pin the back on the seat, right sides facing each other and wrinkled parts against each other, so you create a seat already.

7. Speld de rugsteun op het zitgedeelte met de goede kanten op elkaar en met de gefronste delen tegen elkaar, zodat je een stoeltje creëert.

8. Fold the tabs in the width, right sides facing each other. Sew the long sides.

8. Vouw de lusjes in de breedte dubbel met de goede kanten op elkaar. Stik de lange zijdes.

9. Turn the tabs so the right side is on the outside. Iron flat and stitch along the sides.

9. Keer de lusjes door het overgebleven keergat en strijk ze plat. Stik de naden door.

10. Pin the tabs on the right side of the back that's lined with fiberfill. Make sure they are pointing inwards. Pin a tab on both sides of the back and one at bottom of the seat, in the middle. Check the correct positions with the original cover.

10. Speld de lusjes op de goede kant van het rugdeel met wattine zodat ze naar binnen liggen. Een lusje aan elke zijkant en een lusje onderaan het zitgedeelte, in het midden. De precieze hoogte meet je het beste na op de originele hoes.

11. Pin the bottom part on the seat, right sides facing each other. Sew together.

11. Speld en stik het onderste gedeelte op het zitgedeelte, met de goede kanten op elkaar.

12. Repeat steps 5-7 for the remaining parts. Pin the tab you have left on the bottom of the seat, in the middle, and repeat step 11.

12. Herhaal stap 5-7 met de overgebleven stukken. Speld het overgebleven lusje op het midden onderaan het zitgedeelte en herhaal dan stap 11.

13. Pin the belt parts on top of each other, right sides facing each other. Sew together, but make sure you leave a hole to turn the whole thing through.

13. Leg de gordeldelen met de goede kanten op elkaar. Stik de gordeldelen samen, maar let erop dat er een keergat overblijft.

14. Turn the belt so the right side is on the outside. Sew the hole closed using a blind stitch.

14. Keer de gordel, en naai het keergat dicht met een blinde steek.

15. Sew the button holes on the belt.

15. Naai de knoopsgaten op de gordel.

15. Turn the cover so the right side is on the outside. Sew the buttons on the tabs.
    Note: The tabs on the sides need a button on each side.

15. Keer de hoes zodat de goede kant aan de buitenkant komt te zitten, en naai de knopen op de lusjes.
    Opmerking: Op de lusjes aan de zijkant komt er een knop aan beide kanten.

16. Finish the hem (2 cm / 0.8 in).

16. Werk de zoom af (2 cm).

Finished! Doesn't that look a lot better than the original spotty cover? Careful, though. The original cover secures your baby with a special system. On Justina Maria Louisa's blog, I saw she used buckle belts. I'm not too big a fan of these, since I always get my fingers in between (that's why my camera bag is never closed properly). I certainly wouldn't want to get my boy's fingers caught in them either. So I chose to use plain old buttons. Works fine, but make sure to always tug the belt a bit, so it's really tight around the button. I wouldn't want to see my boy bouncing around the room without his bouncing seat.

Klaar! En dat oogt toch wat vrolijker dan die originele plekkenhoes :-) Let wel op: het originele exemplaar werkt met een speciaal kliksysteem. Jaja, klikvast, ook achter in de relax! Justina Maria Louisa gebruikte klikgespen in de plaats. Maar ik slaag er altijd in om op de een of andere manier mijn vingers daartussen te krijgen (vandaar dat de flap van mijn fototoesteltas meestal los hangt te bengelen). En ik zou niet graag diezelfde lompigheid overbrengen op mijn kleine ventje. Dus ik heb voor gewone knopen gekozen. Werkt perfect, maar ik let er wel op om de gordel telkens goed naar beneden te trekken, zodat de knoop zeker helemaal in het uiterste van het knoopsgat zit. Dat die kapoen hier niet plots zonder wipper door de kamer wipt.
